The MBL research concerns plants, animals and insects using advanced molecular techniques and state-of-the art laboratory equipment. Research activities on plants include the molecular characterization of citrus viroids in Cyprus. Other activities include the development of molecular markers on barley. In animals, research concerns the genetic analysis of blood samples of Chios sheep to identify and select genotypes resistant to Scrapie disease. For insects, research activities are focusing on the genetic and eco-ethology of the Cyprus honeybee Apis mellifera Cypria and the resistance of the olive fruit fly, Bactrocerae oleae Gmelin to organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides. Also the molecular mechanism of the resistance to spinosad of the olive fruit fly is under investigation.
