Agricultural research in Syria goes back to the 1960's, when the General Commission for Agricultural Scientific Research (GCSAR) was established. Six departments including Department of Agricultural Research, Land Department, Department of Irrigation and Water Uses, Cotton Office, Citrus Office, and Olive Office were reorganized and merged.
